How to Link Your GoDaddy, Google Domains, or Namecheap Domain to AWS

If you've made it to this blog, it's because you're unfamiliar with the process of linking your existing domain—whether it's on GoDaddy, Google Domains, or Namecheap—to an AWS Management Console account, but don't worryC4C7OPSis here to walk you through this process clearly and simply, just the way we like it.

First, it's important to understand that linking a domain from any hosting provider other than AWS does not mean your domain will be transferred to AWS; instead, we will create a connection between AWS and your web hosting account.

In this case, we'll outline the steps to establish this link for the following domain providers:

• GoDaddy
• Google Domains
• Namecheap

To begin, go to the C4C7OPS console and click 'Create'.

Then we create our domain as follows:

• In the 'Domain' field, we will enter the name of the domain we want to link with AWS
• For this case, we will leave the 'Parent domain' field empty
• In 'Api Keys', we will select the previously created keys
• If you have not performed a connection process between AWS and the C4C7OPS console, please go toConnecting the C4C7OPS console with AWS
• In the 'Management options' field, please select 'Create a new hosted zone on AWS for this domain'. This will create the necessary records on AWS to carry out the linking process with different web hosting platforms.

Once the domain record is in the 'Running' state, we can head over to AWS

Now, in AWS, if we go toRoute 53>Hosted zoneswe can find the created domain. We access it and will see the records (Records) created for this domain, which are important for later on.

At this point, we go to our web hosting provider to continue with the linking.

Linking my GoDaddy domain with AWS

If we are on GoDaddy, the linking process is as simple as:

1. While on 'My Products', we go to the options button of the domain we want to link and then click on 'Manage DNS'.

2. Now in this new window, we scroll down until we find the 'Export Zone File (Unix)' option in 'Advanced Features'.

3. Luego nos dirigiremos hacia AWS y en el domino creado pulsamos el botón ‘Import zone file’ allí pegaremos el contenido del archivo obtenido del paso anterior, importante eliminar los datosSOAyNS, ya que estos se crearon anteriormente al crear el dominio en AWS, finalmente pulsamos ‘Import’

4. Vamos hacia el registroNS(en el ‘Record name’ de este debería estar el nombre del dominio a vincular) y copiamos los ‘name servers’ ubicados en ‘Value/Route traffic to’

5. Ahora, estando en la pantalla de GoDaddy (paso 1), buscamos los ‘Nameservers’ y pulsamos sobre el botón ‘Change’

6. In the modal that opens, go to the 'Enter my own nameservers (advanced)' option, then paste each nameserver copied from AWS, removing the period (.) at the end of each one, and save

7. A new modal will now open asking for consent to update the 'Nameservers'. We grant it and click 'Continue', which will complete the linking process

This process normally takes less than an hour to apply the changes; however, it can take up to 48 hours.

Linking my domain in Google Domains with AWS

Once in your Google Domains account, we will perform the following steps to complete the linking process:

1. First we click on 'My domains' and then on the involved domain, in the new view that we will have, in the left navigation bar we go to 'DNS' where at the top we will have the 'Export resource records' option

2. Next we will head to AWS and in the created domain we click the 'Import zone file' button, there we will paste the contents of the file obtained from the previous step, it is important to delete the dataSOAyNS, ya que estos se crearon anteriormente al crear el dominio en AWS, finalmente pulsamos ‘Import’

3. Now returning to the 'Google Domains' window, within the domain in the 'DNS' option we validate and if necessary we grant permissions to modify DNS, we will do this by clicking onDisable DNSSEC

4. Select 'Custom name servers' to register the 'name servers' generated during the domain creation process in AWS, and click the 'Save' button

5. Now, for our domain to use this new configuration, at the top of the screen will be the 'Switch to these settings' option. This completes our linking process

Linking my domain in Namecheap

To carry out the domain integration process with AWS, you had to log into your Namecheap account. After doing this:

1. We go to 'Domain List' in the left navigation bar. In the displayed list, we click on 'Manage' for the domain we want to use, then we click on Advanced DNS, so that in the 'HOST RECORDS' row we can identify the records we need to create for the domain created in AWS.

2. Ahora, estando en la ventana de AWS Route 53, tenemos que replicar de forma exacta cada registro observado, a excepción de los valores NS o SOA si existen

3. Luego de crear los registros, nos dirigimos a la ventana de Namecheap en la que estábamos anteriormente y pulsamos sobre ‘Domain’ buscamos la etiqueta ‘NAMESERVERS’ y allí seleccionamos ‘Custom DNS’ y pegamos uno a uno los ‘name servers’ generados en AWS al crear el dominio removiendo el punto (.) del final de cada uno, y pulsamos en el ‘check’ (√) de lado derecho de los ‘name servers’

4. Con esto tendremos que esperar hasta 48 para que nuestra vinculación haya terminado
